Bended Knee Vineyard

Aboriginal History

The vineyard and Mount both take their name from Bonin Yowang the local Aboriginal name for the Mount. The Wathaurang people inhabited the lands of Western Victoria, around Ballarat and along the coast.

From a distance, Mount Buninyong resembles a man lying on his side with knees bent up and a wound (the volcano crater) in his side. Europeans have translated this original name as depicting a man lying with bent knees.

If you get a chance to visit nearby Ballarat, more information on the local aboriginal history, art and culture can be found at Kirrit Barreet Gallery in Main Rd Ballarat.
